Summary

In this tutorial, we show how to update the firmware of a Heliotis Gen4 device using the Heliotis Update Tool. You will learn how to select the correct firmware version, perform a standard update using an IPKG package, and when a full device image is required instead.

Updating the firmware of a Heliotis Gen4 device

The firmware of a Heliotis Gen4 device must match the installed version of the Gen4 SDK. The Heliotis Update Tool, which is installed together with C4Utility, displays the device status and allows you to update the firmware.

1. Check the installed SDK version

Open the Heliotis Update Tool and select Help → About.

The Diafus version shown there indicates the installed Gen4 SDK version. For compatibility, the first two version blocks of the SDK and the device firmware must match.

Example: With Diafus 1.12.x, firmware version 1.12.x must be installed on the device.

2. Download the appropriate firmware package

On the Heliotis website, open Support → Software Downloads and, in the Gen4 firmware section, download the Gen4 Device Update that matches the installed SDK version.

For a standard firmware update, the IPKG package is used.

The download area may also provide a full Device Image. This is not required for normal firmware updates. It is used to restore a device that is no longer reachable or when the SD card needs to be replaced.

3. Update the firmware

Open the Heliotis Update Tool and select the desired device.

If the device status is shown in red, the installed firmware may not be compatible with the C4Utility version in use.

Select Update Device and then the previously downloaded IPKG package. Start the update and do not interrupt either the network connection or the device power supply during the process.

4. Verify the update

After the update is complete, the device restarts and is then detected again by the Update Tool.

A green status indicator confirms that the installed firmware is compatible with C4Utility. The Heliotis Gen4 device is now ready for use again.
